Clemons' 41 sends 'Cats to Regionals
Chris Clemons was just 24 hours removed from his worst statistical game of the season as he posted 10 vs. East Wake on Monday night, he rebounded in a big way during Tuesday's sectional final as he broke his previous record of 40 points to set the new program record for points in a single game with 41 as Millbrook cruised to a 97-66 win over Knightdale and will face Seventy First in the 4A Eastern Regional Semi-Finals in Fayetteville on Thursday night.
Clemons set the tone early for Millbrook as he forced two early turnovers from the Knights. Andrew Evans parlayed one into a layup and Clemons took advantage of the second by hitting his first of three shots from downtown. Rob Brown also got into the fun with six points in a back and forth first quarter that ended with the Wildcats leading by 7, 23-16.
Knightdale would cut the Millbrook lead to three points, two minutes into the 2nd Quarter. With the score 25-22 in favor of Millbrook, the Wildcats went on a 22-2 run due largely in part to Chris Clemons, it was not the three ball that benefited the 5'9 guard but his stroke at the free throw line. Chris found himself at the free throw line seven times in the second quarter and went 13 of 14 from the charity stripe in that span, for good measure, he added another three pointer. Trejon Jacob, fresh off of a 20 point night on Monday also contributed to the Wildcats run as he grabbed two consecutive offensive rebounds and put the latter of the two up for the basket and the foul. What was a seven point lead after one, was a 23 point lead going into the half. Clemons entered the intermission with 30 points, the most in a half in school history.
Clemons was not the only one to flirt with history, Rob Brown who entered the night 17 points away from breaking Princston Terry's school record of 1,228 career points had 8 at halftime. He entered the fourth quarter with 16 points and on a layup to start the final stanza, Brown did indeed break Terry's career points record that was set in 2002. Rob would add a dunk to finish with 27 points on the night. Brown is currently averaging over 22 points per game in the playoffs. Clemons would add a dunk and a pair of layups late to cap off his 41 point performance. Coach McInnes emptied the bench in the final minutes and got a pair of buckets from John Burwell and Rashad George. Reid Herring also got into the scoring fun with a long three in the final 41 seconds of the game. As one Brown was etching his name into the Varsity history books, it was another Brown who officially began his Varsity career. Jabari Brown, a 5'9 Freshman who led the Junior Varsity team in scoring this season, dressed for the first time in his career tonight and saw the court for the final 1:24 of the game.
