Wildcats crush Crusaders, 94-49

The 2nd Annual Millbrook Basketball Winter Showcase was another successful one for the top ranked Wildcats. Last season it was a 39 point win against Trinity Christian School, and NC State commit, Dennis Smith Jr., the nation’s top point guard. On Saturday night, it would be a very similar outcome against Harrells Christian Academy and their star forward Quate McKinzie, a University of Buffalo commit, who is one of the top 10 seniors in North Carolina according to ESPN.com.

Trejon Jacob opened up the scoring with a three, and that would be the first of many from the 6’5 senior. Before he continued his career night, fellow seniors Faison Brock, John Burwell, and Rashad George would get in on the action. Burwell lobbed one up to Brock for the alley oop, then he took a pass from Jordan Whtifield to the bucket for two more. George, who scored a season high 10 points on the night, cashed in with a three point play in the opening four minutes of the game. Whitfield was on the receiving end of one of Burwell’s 5 assists on the night, then it was Burwell who kept the Millbrook run going when he weaved through the lane and got the basket. He then added one of his 6 steals on the night and finished on the other end with one more bucket to close out the first quarter, with the 'Cats ahead 19-14.

Back to Trejon Jacob, he opened the second quarter, the way he opened the 1st with another shot from downtown, he then skied up and sunk a lob from Burwell. For good measure, Jacob went backdoor and laid in a pass to turn a four point game into a fifteen point game. One play later, Rashad George poked an errant pass towards the sideline. Burwell raced over, lept high in the air and saved the ball from going out of bounds. In doing so, he slung it up court to hit George in stride who would then dish a quick touch pass to Brock. The smart, fast paced play summed up the Wildcats' night on both sides of ball as they went into halftime with a 44-27 lead.

Things escalated quickly in the second half as Jacob slammed home a steal to increase Millbrook’s lead to 30. Faison Brock got two more on a pass from Whitfield, who had 11 assists on the night, another one coming moments later on a three from Monte’ Harris. Harris scored a career high 13 points for the second time in as many games, and he downed three shots from beyond the arc. John Burwell finished one spot ahead of Harris on the score sheet with 15 points, and his night ended with 3:29 left in the game when he completed a three point play in the lane.

As his night ended, another one began when Austin Cobb checked in for the first time in his career, and it didn’t take long for him to make his presence felt as he blocked a shot, and took it coast to coast for the score. Cobb, a senior that is playing his first season in basketball program, filled up his stat line late with those two points, and block along with an assist, a rebound, and two fouls. Patrick Dorsey also stuff the stat sheet late with a pair of three's and a late layup to finish sixth in scoring with eight points.

Trejon Jacob capped off the night with an exclamation point as he took a pass from Monte’ Harris and slammed it in on top of a Harrells defender to wrap up the 94-49 win. Jacob went 10-15 from the field and hit 4 of his 6 shots from behind the arc. Going into Cap-8 play, Jacob is leading the team in scoring with 19 points per game. His 25 points are five better than his previous career high of 20 vs. Knightdale (11/24/14), and Sanderson (2/13/15).

Millbrook is now 3-0 on the season and USA Today has them ranked as the #1 team in North Carolina, the North Carolina Basketball Coaches Association also has them in the top spot along with the News and Observer, and HighSchoolOT.com. Cap-8 Conference play begins next as Millbrook hosts Enloe next Friday night at home in the quad. Varsity will tip off at 8:00, and JV will start up at 5:00. For the JV and Freshman Wildcats, they will be in action on Monday when the Queensland Boomerangs from Australia visit for a pair of games at 5:30 and 7:00.
