Brown commits to Winston Salem State
Senior forward, Robert Brown announced his commitment to Division II Winston Salem State University on Tuesday afternoon during an after school ceremony. Millbrook's all-time leading scorer was attracted by the amenties and scholarship that the university offered along with continuing to play college basketball in North Carolina.
Brown lettered all four years at Millbrook and started during his Freshman, Sophomore, and Senior campaigns. His first two years on campus saw him score 9.3, and 9.4 points per game respectively. He averaged 13 points per contest as a Junior, and ended his high school career by scoring 14.7 points per game this season.
Robert played the most games of any player in program history by suiting up 110 times as a Wildcat. He won 81 of those games which is also the most in Millbrook Basketball history. As impressive as those numbers are, none will be as prestigious as his 1,280 points which sits as the most in a career at Millbrook. The 6'9 forward entered his senior year with 855 career points, he became the 4th player in program history to eclipse 1,000 points on December 26th, 2014 in a win over Garner. During the 3rd Round of the state playoffs, Brown scored his 1,229th career point to pass Princston Terry ('02) for first on the all-time scoring list. Rob stands alone with 1,280 points, 50 ahead of his fellow teammate Chris Clemons who ended his high school career with 1,230.
Highlights from his career include his first career varsity game vs. Northern Durham in which he scored 17 points and grabbed 7 rebounds. Less than a month later, Brown had the task of guarding then 6'9 Sophomore, Jahlil Okafor of Whitney Young. He held the Duke Basketball star to only 8 points that night. Rob established himself as an elite postseason performer in his very first playoff game when he scored 21 points to lead Millbrook past JH Rose as a Freshman. Brown guided the Wildcats to three regional appearances in his four years, Millbrook's trip to the 2014 Eastern Regionals
was due largely in part to Rob's performance vs. Seventy First in the 3rd Round when he scored a career high 30 points and grabbed a career high 13 boards vs. the Falcons. He averaged 22.1 PPG in the playoffs during his senior season and earned back-to-back All-Region honors.
Brown won the Cap-8 Conference each year at Millbrook, had a playoff record of 13-4, 81-29 in the regular season, and will graduate as the program's leading scorer. Millbrook High School and the basketball program will never be the same without Rob's presence but his impact will be long lasting.
Winston Salem State is a member of the Division II CIAA conference. The Rams won their division this season with an 18-10 record, their season ended on February 28th with a loss to Livingstone in the CIAA Tournament. WSSU is coached by James Wilhelmi.
